Model United Nations – An Educational Simulation and Academic Activity

Model United Nations (MUN) is a popular educational simulation and academic activity that allows students to learn about international relations, diplomacy, and global issues.

Kalinga University’s Faculty of Law recently organised Model United Nations in collaboration with the Legge Rhythms International Model United Nations (LRIMUN). MUN activity enhanced knowledge of international affairs, improved communication and negotiation skills, heightened global awareness, and developed critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

The Chief guest for the inaugural ceremony was Mr. Nitin Bhansali, Chairman Public Issue Social Foundation and Dr. R Shridhar, Vice-Chancellor, Kalinga University.

Dr. R Shridhar, addressed the gathering emphasizing on the importance of MUN to inculcate oratory skills among the students as well as to make them aware of the happenings around the globe. Mr. Nitin Bhansali, Chairman Public Issue Social Foundation emphasized on the knowledge of international affairs, improved communication and negotiation skills, highlighting global awareness, and developed critical thinking and problem-solving abilities representing different countries and taking on their perspectives fostered cultural awareness among the students.

It was a two-day event where 110 participants, represented different countries or roles as they simulated UN committees and bodies. Delegates took the role of diplomats, debated and discussed global issues from the perspective of their assigned nation. There were three committees namely, UNHRC, DISEC, and LOK SABHA. The agenda for the UNHRC Committee was to follow up on the implementation of the recommendation of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action. The agenda for DISEC was the discussion on the roadmap to ensure peace and security in the Middle East and Afghanistan. The agenda for Lok Sabha was a discussion on the One Nation One Election Policy. Delegates engaged in formal debates and discussed the above-mentioned agendas using parliamentary procedure and following the rules and guidelines of the UN. They presented their country’s stance, negotiated with other delegates, and worked on to build consensus on resolutions.

Dr. Rana Navneet Roy, Associate Professor, Law, Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur graced the valedictory ceremony with his presence. He gave an overview of how law and society are interconnected with each other and how law students can change society with the help of their new ideas as well as awareness. . By representing different countries and understanding the perspective of those countries, students were fostered with the cultural awareness of those countries.

The event was concluded on 5th November 2023 by a Vote of Thanks by Ms. Lubasha Sharma, Co-Founder and Secretary General, LRIMUN.
